Climate change may be the “most fearsome” weapon of mass destruction, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry stated in a speech about the dangers of Climate Change. Kerry went on to say that drought and famine, massive floods and deadly storms will be a result of global warming. He labeled those who denied the evidence of climate change as “shoddy scientists and extreme ideologues.”. However the striking statement was his comparison to those who continue to deny its existence to people who still today insist the Earth is flat.

“The science is unequivocal. And those who refuse to believe it are simply burying their heads in the sand. Now, President Obama and I believe very deeply that we do not have time for a meeting anywhere of the Flat Earth Society.”

Yes, this rejection of basic understanding still exists and in fact is a growing movement, just last week rapper BoB sparred with famed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson over the shape of the Earth.

This Twitter battle spawned a rap off between BoB and Neil deGrasse Tyson’s rapper nephew named Tyson. BoB released a single called Flat Line, that has since been removed, that claimed Neil was being paid off to stay silent. While TYSON responded with a single Flat To Fact and Neil himself made an appearance on “The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore“.

“There’s a growing anti-intellectual strain in this country that may be the beginning of the end of our informed democracy,” Tyson said on the show.

“Discovery and exploration got us out of the caves, and each generation benefits from what previous generations have learned,” he added. “Isaac Newton, my man, said, ‘If I have seen farther than others, it’s by standing on the shoulders of giants.’ Can I get an amen? So that’s right, B.o.B — when you stand on the shoulders of those who came before, you might just see far enough to realize the Earth isn’t f—ing flat.”

Tyson pauses and then added, “And, by the way? This is called gravity!” Cue mic drop.

In most of Neils responses he reiterates that this rejection of science is the core of the issue, this inability to investigate independently or think critically based on evidence allows charismatic individuals or misleading ideas to interfere with otherwise rational individuals.

That’s exactly it, science doesn’t tell us what to think. It’s not a strict guideline of what is or isn’t. It’s a method of investigation, a rigorous litmus test, and a guideline for documenting evidence. In a recent publication by Neil Tyson he addressed this very issue, which I encouraged you the reader to read in full, where he stated:

The scientific method, which underpins these achievements, can be summarized in one sentence, which is all about objectivity:

Do whatever it takes to avoid fooling yourself into thinking something is true that is not, or that something is not true that is.

If anyone follows these simple guidelines believing the Earth is flat is a preposterous idea, watch a lunar eclipse, make a sundial, travel to the southern equator, or do whatever is necessary to investigate the truth.

This rejection of investigation and reliance on alternating opinions is what connects Climate Change deniers and Flat Earthers. On one hand it’s either there’s not enough evidence, or the evidence is manufactured. Flat Earthers claim that NASA photoshops all the hundreds of thousands of space pictures we now get from various probes and satellites. They also claim that it’s a global conspiracy drawn from the vein of the illuminati or some other large mysterious conspiracy.

Is that much different from the rejection of climate change? No, it’s not. Climate Change deniers point to not enough evidence, it’s a liberal conspiracy to redistribute wealth, or some other bizarre non-scientific position. And it all stems from not understanding how science works and why it works as well as it does.

If you cherry-pick scientific truths to serve cultural, economic, religious or political objectives, you undermine the foundations of an informed democracy. – Neil Tyson

Yes, there are issues as with any group of humans working together. That doesn’t mean the entire system is wrought with fraud, it is a self-correcting mechanism that has brought us the foundations for the life we enjoy now. And if you are reading this and you reject Climate Change is caused by humans and/or is not a real threat then you’re simply not following the evidence where it leads. This blog post is not saying you are an idiot or attacking your beliefs, it’s just an unfortunate coincidence that it happens to be the same rationality that Flat Earthers use to deny the roundness of Earth.
